  Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program

The Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) provides a wide range of culturally competent services

to pregnant women from conception through 60 days postpartum/after delivery.

The CPSP program was developed from the "Prenatal and

OB Access Project," a successful prenatal demonstration project that ran from 1979 to 1982 and reached over 15,000 low-income women in 13 California counties.

Comprehensive services were shown to reduce the low birthweight rate by one-third.  They also save approximately $2 in short-term Neonatal Intensive Care Unit costs for every $1 spent.

Because of these positive results CPSP was legislated in 1984 and included as part of the Medi-Cal program in 1987.

Medi-Cal managed care health plans are required to provide access to CPSP services for all Medi-Cal eligible enrollees.

The Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) integrates perinatal health education, nutrition and pychosocial interventions with basic obstetrical care in order to improve the outcome of every pregnancy.

Provider participation in the program requires a formal application process and certification by the State Department of Health Services.
