Two upcoming events will welcome the community back
to Pasadena City Hall, which was closed for three years for a major seismic
retrofit and historic restoration.
Sunday,
July 15:
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Centennial Square (in front of City Hall on Garfield
Avenue), enjoy special exhibits, jazz musicians, face painters, a stilts
performer, artists creating paintings of City Hall and much more. A food court
will offer refreshments or you can bring your own picnic. Crowning the evening
will be a 7:30 p.m. concert by The Pasadena Pops Orchestra. A fantasy light
extravaganza will conclude this unforgettable celebration, which is sponsored by
City of Pasadena, Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission, Parsons, Target, Bank of
America and JPL/Caltech.
Sunday, July 22:
Come back to City Hall from 3 to 6 p.m. for tours conducted by Pasadena
Heritage, live music, refreshments, special exhibits, children's activities and
more. Formal tours of the building are very rare, so don't miss this great
opportunity! One-hour tours will begin every 20 minutes; the final tour will
begin at 5 p.m.

accessible parking spaces and a curb ramp on Garfield Avenue; an accessible
elevator on the Euclid Avenue side of the building; new door lever hardware and
automatic openers for many double-leaf doors; accessible counters in reception
areas; signage with raised and Braille characters; new handrails in all

Sadly, drowning remains one of the leading causes of death
for children under five. Prevent tragedy with these tips from Pasadena Fire
Department:
• Install a wraparound fence with a self-closing,
self-latching gate. Make sure the latch is out of reach of little hands.
• Children are climbers. Keep tables and chairs far
away from the pool to prevent them from hopping the fence. Stash enticing pool
toys out of sight.
• Lock all doors and windows leading to the pool
but remember that there's no substitute for supervision.
• Remove the cover completely when the pool is in
use.
• When swimming, never take your eyes off your
children. Instruct babysitters, visiting relatives, friends and grandparents to
do the same. (Never substitute flotation devices or vests for supervision).
• Keep rescue equipment and a telephone by your
pool.
• Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Visit
www.sgvarc.org for a class schedule or call
(626) 799-0841.
For more information about pool safety call (626) 744-7177.
Enjoy easy travel this summer
on Pasadena ARTS Buses and let air-conditioned shuttles carry you to every
corner of the city. Ride to work or school, go to a shopping district or do some
summer sightseeing at Pasadena's parks, libraries, museums and landmarks. The
fare is just 50˘ (25˘ for seniors, persons with disabilities and riders in
grades K-12). Up to two children under 5 can ride free with a fare-paying adult.
Pick up a route map at Pasadena City Hall, call 744-4055 or visit
www.cityofpasadena.net/trans and click on Transit Planning.
The Transportation
Department has unveiled two simple ways to buy
temporary overnight parking permits for just $3 (they're no longer available by
phone).
First, stop by one of five TOPEK machines (it stands for Temporary Overnight
Parking Exemption Kiosk) at Pasadena Police Department, 207 N. Garfield Ave.;
Fire Station #32, 2424 E. Villa St.; Fire Station #33, 515 N. Lake Ave.; Fire
Station #34, 1360 E. Del Mar Blvd.; or Fire Station #36, 1140 N. Fair Oaks Ave.
You can also buy a permit at
www.cityofpasadena.net (click on Parking Permits) for $3 plus a $1
convenience fee per transaction with your Visa or MasterCard. You'll need to
enter your vehicle license plate or VIN number and print out the permit for
display in your vehicle.
To be valid, your permit must be purchased before 5:45 a.m. on the first day
requested and can be purchased up to 10 days in advance. (You can't buy a permit
after receiving a parking citation.) If you need a more permanent parking
solution, you can apply for an annual overnight parking permit in room N106 at
Pasadena City Hall or by calling
744-4166.
The new system helps streamline our parking enforcement program while decreasing
unnecessary tickets. For more information call (800) 317-7177.
Groups offering to paint
home addresses on curbs are not authorized by the city
of Pasadena unless they have received proper permits and licenses. No murals,
emblems, photos or illustrations are allowed – only black numbers on white
backgrounds.
Canning Hunger, a non-profit food relief organization, recently received permits
to do this work and will place notices on doors in certain neighborhoods asking
for a $10 donation for this service. Please note that a donation is not required
in exchange for this service.
For more information call (626) 744-4720.
Pasadena is booming and you can be part of the action!
Any developer who receives financial incentives from the city, including tax
rebates or loans, must agree to have a certain percentage of construction work
hours performed by Pasadena residents.
The City Manager's Office is compiling a list of skilled and unskilled residents
to share with developers and contractors. For complete details in English and
Spanish, or if you'd like to be on the list, visit
www.cityofpasadena.net/citymanager and click on First Source Hiring or call
744-4222. The program also offers free workshops to help prepare you for a job
with a contractor.
