The Pasadena Police Department’s Air Operations Section conducted substantial research on identifying a helicopter that would meet law enforcement needs and operate with reduced noise. Quiet helicopter technology advances in recent years have contributed to quieter helicopters. The Department placed an order for one MD 500E model police helicopter after approval by City Council was received in September 2008. The newly ordered MD 500E will start the department's replacement plan of their current fleet of aging aircraft. According to Pasadena Air Operations OIC, Captain Bob Mulhall, “The MD 500E was selected for a variety of reasons. Its speed, durability, maneuverability and overall performance are unmatched in a police helicopter. Just as important in the urban environment is the MD 500E’s noise signature. That’s why the department selected the four-bladed quiet tail rotor system.” Purchase of the MD 500 E will give the City an opportunity to field a safer and quieter aircraft, clearly capable of performing the law enforcement mission while keeping costs to a minimum. The new helicopter was delivered in December 2009.
