NORTHWEST PROGRAMS OFFICE ATTENDS PASADENA EXPOS CAREER FAIR

On Wednesday, January 23, 2008, the Pasadena Expo held a career fair at the Pasadena Convention Center. Both the Northwest Programs and Enterprise Zone Office promoted and attended this career fair to promote their various business outreach programs to both job seekers and job recruiters. The career fair attracted over 700 job seekers and 38 companies, including Rusnak Auto Group, Farmers Insurance, Sheraton, Pacific Clinics and the Foothill Employment Training Center (FETC).

The Enterprise Zone was able to issue 28 Targeted Employment Area Cards to attending job seekers that met one of the twelve qualifying criteria under the Hiring Credit Program. The Targeted Employment Area Card helps identify to a business employer which potential job seeking candidate may earn that company a five-year state tax credit potentially up to $37,000. Additionally, Northwest Programs staff promoted the Ambassador Program to attending Pasadena high school students. The Ambassador Program not only provides high school students with work experience and interaction with students from other schools and it also pays participating students $8.00 per hour for each participating event.

LINCOLN AVENUE CLEAN-UP DAY

More than 100 hundred Altadena/Pasadena community volunteers and City staff gathered in front of John Muir High School on Sunday morning, January 13, 2007 to clean-up the Lincoln Avenue corridor. The event began at John Muir High School and headed north along Lincoln Avenue to Woodbury Road. Volunteers removed weeds and debris from the City parkway, while Pasadena Public Works crews installed new mulch in each of the City tree wells. Proud participants of the event included members of the Northwest Pasadena Ambassador Youth Program.

PASADENA JOB CENTER TRACKING DATABASE

Located at 500 North Lake Avenue, the Pasadena Job Center provides daily job opportunities to Northwest Pasadena residents and community building activities to assist underemployed and unemployed residents, who live at, near, or below the federal poverty level. Operated by the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA), a non-profit community-based organization, the City of Pasadena assists this group through financial backing with Community Block Grant Funds. As part of the funding, the City donated two computers and helped develop and install a localized job center database program to record the number of residents and businesses utilizing the Pasadena Job Center. This database program will report out on the number of residents finding employment and track any necessary demographic information to ensure services are meeting the needs of the community.
