May 27 & May 29  Pasadena Plastic Bag Reduction Meetings
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Pasadena City Hall
Council Chambers
100 North Garfield Avenue

The City of Pasadena is holding two public meetings to gather stakeholder & public input as the city explores forming a plastic bag reduction program. Pasadena is committed to forging policies in support of increased environmental stewardship in partnership with the community. Pasadena’s Green City Action Plan, adopted in 2006, identifies the development of a plastic bag reduction program to support its goal of achieving zero waste to landfills by 2040.

The meetings are tailored to address different retailers’ needs and concerns. The May 27th meeting is for large grocers and retailers (gross annual sales of $2 million or more or with over 10,000 square feet of retail space). The May 29th meeting is for smaller grocers and retailers that fall under these thresholds.

In developing the framework for the program, the City will be assessing whether current store programs implemented under the Plastic Bag Recycling Act (AB 2449) have resulted in reduced plastic bag use and increased recycling of plastic bags. AB 2449 became effective July 1, 2007 and requires all large grocers and retail stores to make available containers for the collection and recycling of plastic carryout bags, and reusable bags for purchase. This and other issues will be discussed at the meeting.
