NATIONAL LIBRARY CARD MONTH

Celebrate National Library Card Month this September by getting a the smartest card of all – a library card at your local Pasadena Public Library. Studies show that children who are read to and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” says Jan Sanders, Director of Libraries and Information Services for the City of Pasadena. “Kids can come to the library to get homework help or assistance with their research projects or book reports. They can also check out free music, DVDs or use the Internet to make after school life a little more fun. There’s a lot happening at the Pasadena Public Library.”

A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together. Forty-four percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason.

For more information on how you can sign up for your library card, visit the Pasadena Public Library closest to you, call (626) 744-4066 or go to the library’s Web site at PasadenaPublicLibrary.net.

Have you ever been kept awake at night needing information or a fact for a meeting or a class the next day? You toss and turn-unable to sleep. Instead of losing sleep, contact 24/7 Reference, where a free, live, online interactive information expert is available to answer your quick -answer information needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Need a quick fact? A statistic? An address? Articles for a term paper? Professional librarians, including subject specialists, from California and other participating states contribute their expertise to the 24/7 Reference service. Because of the large number of participating libraries and the cooperative nature of the service, no one library needs to provide more than a few hours of staffing time per day or week. Pasadena Public Library staff answer questions for the 24/7 reference service 2-3 hours per week, which entitles all of our users to have access to the service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If a question needs more in-depth research, the customer will be provided with a referral or will get an e-mail response normally within 48 hours. "This is the wave of the future," says Reference Division manager Susan Poster. "Librarians are providing the same expert information services they always have, but now 24/7 allows us to do this at a time and place most convenient for the user." The above service is always available for any topic including homework, health and law but if you would like more specialized service: · Homework help for students in grades 4-12 is available from Saturday through Thursday 3pm-9pm · Health information specialists are available from Monday - Friday 8-5 · Law librarians await your daytime requests Monday-Friday and Monday evenings 6-8 · Need assistance in Spanish? Search California—Discover the World @ the Pasadena Public Library

Now you can search the collections of libraries throughout California, and the world from the convenience of the Pasadena Public Library's catalog and website.
From the Library’s website (www.pasadenapubliclibrary.net) click on the “library catalog” button. Look for the link that says “search other libraries” and enter the vast resources of the new California Libraries Catalog (CAlcat). “This is a giant step forward for libraries and information seekers,” says Beth Walker, Principal Librarian at Pasadena Public Library.

Create a search that meets your specific needs: by type of library (academic, public, etc.), by format (books, musical scores, visual materials, computer files, magazines and newspapers, maps, etc.) or simply by title or author to locate an item. If you live or work in Pasadena, request the title through our Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL), just an easy click away.

Use CAlcat to view collections from libraries all over the world through its connection to the WorldCat Catalog, a global database listing more than a billion items—everything from stone tablets to sheet music to MP3s, DVDs, newspapers, government documents and more! WorldCat includes items held by libraries throughout the United States and more than 80 countries.

“Access to these catalogs will be a boon for students, teachers, researchers, business people and others,” said Jan Sanders, Pasadena Public Library Director. “If you have a special interest such as history, genealogy or gardening, or a special need, such as Braille, or large print, you’re going to want to use this exciting resource.”
CAlcat was developed with a federal Library Services and Technology Act grant administered by the State Library of California. WorldCat is a service of OCLC, a worldwide library cooperative.

If you are searching the Pasadena Public Library's catalog, look for the "search other libraries" link and try it today!
