Therapy on Horseback for Children with Special Needs

The MACH 1 (Move a Child Higher) is a therapeutic horseback riding program designed for children with various disabilities. The program is a member of the abides by the standards of safety and practice recommended by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. Children improve their functional independence and have fun while learning.

The child is evaluate by a certified occupational therapist after a parent interview has been conducted. Based on the therapist's findings and a consultation with the instructor and the child's family, an individualized lesson plan is created. The lesson plan combines physical psychological, cognitive, and behavioral goals, while using the horse as a strong motivator for accomplishing these goals. Each child's progress is documented and reevaluated on a monthly basis.

Fees are $35 for the initial evaluation, and $35 per lesson (including detailed lesson plans). Limited scholarships are available. MACH is conveniently located at Hahamonga Watershed Area. MACH 1 is vendored with regional centers. Volunteer opportunities are available to trained volunteers who assist by leading and sidewalking the horse during lessons.

Please contact Joy Rittenhouse at (626) 798-1222 for parent interview and evaluation with a certified occupational therapist.
