  • What is WIC?


    Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federally–funded supplemental food, nutrition education and breastfeeding support program. WIC helps families with women and/or children who are at nutritional risk by providing nutrition education along with monthly food coupons. WIC's goal is to prevent health problems and improve the health of participants during critical times of growth and development.  

    WIC serves over 5,000 clients in the greater Pasadena area, including South Pasadena, Sierra Madre and Altadena. 

     

  • Who is Eligible?

    1. Participants must be in one of the following categories:

    • Pregnant woman
    • Breastfeeding woman
    • Postpartum woman up to 6 months (if not breastfeeding) or up to 12 months (if breastfeeding)
    • Children under 5 years of age
    • Fathers, grandparents, or foster parents taking care of children under the age of 5 may be eligible

    WIC is an equal opportunity provider 

    2. Applicant's family income must meet 185% of the current federal poverty guidelines. Families with low or moderate-income levels may qualify. Click here for the WIC Eligibility Assessment. (Note: this online tool is only a preliminary assessment - only Local WIC Agency staff can determine if you qualify for WIC services.)

    3. Applicant must be a California resident

    4. Applicant must be at nutritional risk, as determined by a health professional. The nutrition evaluation is based on:

    • Height, weight, growth assessment
    • Hematocrit or hemoglobin to screen for anemia
    • Health history and diet assessment

    • Culturally relevant care.  Staff are multi-lingual and can speak Spanish, Tagalog, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese and Taiwanese.  Translation is available in other languages.

    Food Checks

    WIC participants receive monthly food checks for specific foods prescribed to meet their individual needs. Here is a list of WIC foods that you may receive:

    • Whole grains and iron-rich foods
    • Milk (cow, lactose-free, or soy-based)
    • Cheese or tofu
    • Eggs
    • Peanut butter
    • High Vitamin C juice
    • Fruits and vegetables
    • Iron-fortified infant formula
    • Baby food
    • Additional baby food for infant if mom breastfed him/her
    • Additional food for mom if she is exclusively breastfeeding baby

    Breastfeeding Support

    WIC moms are encouraged to breastfeed. During pregnancy, you can receive information about breastfeeding and its benefits, along with the option of enrolling in our Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program. After delivery, moms can receive support with breastfeeding materials, such as manual or electric breast pumps*; help with latching; aid in understanding your baby's sleep, cues and crying; or other assistance as needed from our Certified Lactation Educators and Counselors. Current participants can call (626) 744-6050 for assistance.

    *Special requirements are needed for electric breast pumps.

    How to apply:

    Eligibility depends on income. Working families may qualify. Call us at (626) 744-6520 to make an appointment. At your appointment, WIC staff will check to see if you and your family qualify. Please bring the following documents to the appointment: 

    • Proof of income - such as a paycheck stub, tax return, Medi-Cal card or letter from employer
    • Proof of address - Current mail such as utility bill, rent receipt or any letter received through US mail
    • Identification - such as driver license, passport, student ID, birth certificate or immunization card
    • Medical information - current height/weight and blood test for anemia for children over 6 months of age; proof of pregnancy (if applicable)
    • The person who is applying - such as the mother and/or child; all must be present at enrollment and all certification appointments

  • Authorized Foods & Shopping Guide

    The WIC Authorized Food List Shopping Guide (WAFL/SG) is the official document that outlines the foods authorized in the California WIC Program. The WAFL/SG will be reviewed and revised by the California WIC Program as needed on an annual basis.
