Juneteenth Festival on Saturday will Focus on Health, Live Music

A traditional African-America Juneteenth Festival will be held at Jackie Robinson Center Saturday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s focus is on healthy living and family fun. The festival will offer a health seminar, live performances, games and food vendors.

The health seminar will begin at 10 a.m. with experts discussing hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and surviving prostrate and breast cancer. A cooking demonstration and exercise will follow.

The afternoon will feature live performances by Los Angeles Jazz All Stars, Gospel rapper Michael the Archangel, R&B by Dale and Company, spoken word by K Rhan, 4 Christ Ryders, Carolyn Hill, Bobby Wilkerson & the Funk All Stars, Ollie Strawberri, Andre Rae (formerly of LTD), Lil Zane and the Delfonics Review.

Juneteenth, or June 19, 1865, is considered the date when the last slaves in America were freed, two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

At 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Jackie Robinson Center is a community center celebrating 36 years of service. It was dedicated in 1974 and named after one of the country’s great African American leaders. The center provides assistance to a culturally, economically and socially diverse population.

“Given the name of this community center, staff strives to address every problem, concern and situation with knowledge, compassion, dignity and respect,” said Jarvis Emerson, center director.
