As a Level 1 water shortage remains in effect in Pasadena, cool-season water restrictions will begin Sunday, Nov. 1, through March 31, 2010.

Outdoor watering with sprinkler systems is restricted to one day per week, as provided in Pasadena’s mandatory water shortage procedures (Pasadena Municipal Code 13.10).  Each property owner may choose which one day per week to water – Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday – before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m. during this period.

Watering by hand and drip irrigation are exempt from these procedures.  In addition, irrigation systems with “smart” weather-based irrigation controllers are exempt because they are highly water-efficient and run only as needed in response to weather patterns.  Pasadena Water and Power offers $150 rebates on smart controllers.

The one-day-per-week watering schedule is consistent with plant watering needs during cool weather.  With more frequent rain and cooler, shorter days, lawns and landscaping need much less watering.  Many species of plants and lawns are also dormant at this time of the year.
Regardless of the time of year or day, water waste is prohibited in Pasadena.  Watering during periods of rain, washing down pavement, excessive runoff onto pavement and other forms of water waste carry fines of $100 and $1,000.
