On July 18, 2016, the Pasadena City Council voted to ban the sale and distribution of polystyrene disposable food service ware within Pasadena.

The polystyrene food packaging ordinance (PMC 8.67) took effect on August 22, 2016 at City facilities and operations. Twelve monthly later on August 22, 2017, the ban will apply to Pasadena businesses and organizations. The polystyrene food packaging ordinance (ban) will prohibit all food providers in Pasadena from dispensing prepared food in polystyrene food service containers. The purpose of the ban is to reduce polystyrene litter and encourage the use of containers that can be readily recycled or composted or that decompose within landfilled.
